This is a handmade throw pillow featuring a picture of the artist. The process starts with a two-color screen print, and is hand-finished with beads, yarn, fabric, and love into a unique pillow by one of our wonderful women.
Dave Schools, from the band Widespread Panic, believes in the empowerment of women through skills training and education in the heart of Athens, GA. Your donation allows local women the chance to achieve gainful employment by doing something they love: sewing.
We hope you like surprises! What you see here are examples of the quality and creativity of our work, but not your individual pillow. Each pillow is a handmade, one-of-a-kind, unique keepsake of Athens music history. They start with the same screen-printed image, and are then hand-assembled, decorated, and bedazzled to perfection. No two are alike, so you will be the only person in the world with this awesome swag.
Athens has danced her way through the decades. From corner bar crooners to glossy superstars, Athens boasts an eccentric musical glamour unmatched by any other town. Beneath this beat of progress and creativity, lies another chord that is far more dissonant and just as undeniable. 35% of Athenians live below the poverty rate. What if the beauty of Athensís music could write a new tune of hope and†independence for disadvantaged women in Athens?†
PALS (a program of Women to the World), is a dynamic GED program that focuses on holistic education, entrepreneurship, and skills training. Local women cultivate business savvy and graduate from the class with a mastery in product development, marketing, and strategic planning.†
But what value is an education without an opportunity to use it? PALS of Athens Musicians is a community-sewing cooperative featuring the handiwork of local women. We craft one-of-a-kind pillow dolls in the likeness of Athens's most noteworthy musicians. Now the most celebrated aspect of Athens culture is empowering women to celebrate themselves. And thatís something to dance about.†
