Description: Part of the Athens Music Scene series. Subject is the†Georgia Theatre (Clayton & Lumpkin Streets, downtown Athens). "In 1978: The Tone Tones played their first public gig, opening for the B-52ís at The Georgia Theatre.† It was converted to a movie theater and was reopened as a club in 1989."

Artist Information: Mary Padgelek studied art at the University of Georgia for both undergraduate and graduate school, and in 1998, she graduated with a Ph.D. degree from the Lamar Dodd School of Art.† Padgelek taught art in public school for ten years and was an instructor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art in the Department of Art Education from 1996-2000.

Padgelek has exhibited her art in numerous one-person and group exhibitions throughout the South. She has created a series of paintings on Athens of close to 50 different locations. Since she began this series in 1984, quite a few of the paintings are of businesses that no longer exist.

Some of the paintings she features on are from her series of "The Athens Music Scene." The book, Athens Sketchbook, published by Indigo Press in Macon, GA. in 2005 includes 10 paintings published from her Athens Series. Please visit her web site to see her other work:
